How to Pack and Transport Batteries Safely

Although batteries are now commonly used in all types of portable electronics, tools, and other equipment, they can be a dangerous source of heat, sparks or fire if they are not packaged properly for transport. For this reason, businesses and customers should follow strict safety regulations and take appropriate precautions when preparing batteries for transport. Battery shipments may be required to comply with both US and international safety regulations, and non-compliance with these regulations can be potentially dangerous, so those who fail to pack shipments in accordance with these regulations may face fines or other penalties.

Other types of batteries (including lithium ion and lithium metal batteries) may be fully controlled hazardous substances (also known as dangerous goods) and therefore, in addition to the above basic safety precautions, require specialist packaging, specific hazard labeling, and proof of compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Protecting batteries and electrodes

When transporting almost all types of batteries, you must protect the electrodes to avoid fires due to short circuits. To protect the electrodes, they can be completely covered with an insulating, non-conductive material.

Pack the battery properly to avoid crushing or damage and to avoid displacement of the battery during transport.

Always keep the battery away from metal objects or any other material that could trigger a short circuit in the electrodes (e.g. place the battery in a separate inner case)

Note: To prevent fires from occurring, any device containing batteries must be closed during transport to prevent the device from being opened accidentally. Even very simple devices such as torches or cordless drills can generate enough heat to cause a hazard if accidentally activated.
