Increasingly, people opt for environmentally-friendly alternatives in response to civilization’s mushrooming. The same applies to vehicles as well. As cars have been equipped with start-stop technology, a start-stop car battery has become more needed.
A few words about start-stop
First devised by Toyota in the 1970s during an oil crisis, the start-stop system was the first to be widely used. Volkswagen and Audi introduced start-stop systems in the 1980s. Modern robust and sophisticated start-stop systems came into use in the 2000s.
What are the reasons for its popularity?
In order to meet the challenges of start-stop systems, start-stop car batteries are capable of taking a double load. The car battery is frequently charged and discharged when traveling in an urban area. Start-stop batteries reduce fuel consumption when the engine is stopped at a standstill. The battery’s cycling ability helps it provide energy to operate electrical accessories such as lights, windshield wipers, radios, and displays.
Two types of Start-stop batteries are there.
EFB or Enhanced Flooded Battery:
EFB is famous for adjusting the active material formula and improving the deep cycle performance. This battery has a potential shock resistance. EFB can prevent the battery’s active formula from falling off.
Some features of this battery are:
- It has an ultra-low internal resistance separator that reduces the battery’s self-discharge.
- It’s fully sealed, and the maintenance-free design ensures reduced water loss and prolonged battery life.
- EFB can start the engine even in a state of low temperature and low charge.
- Multi-element lead-calcium-tin alloy grid, corrosion resistance, and less water loss ensure the prolonged service life of the battery even in high temperatures.
AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat battery:
The AGM battery is an eco-friendly battery. It effectively reduces gasoline emissions by up to 8%. The Lead-Carbon Capacitance Technology in this battery improves the battery’s charge acceptance. So, the battery can promptly capture the feedback current from vehicles.
Features of this battery:
- For this battery’s low internal resistance, it gets charged in less time.
- This maintenance-free is 100% leak-free also.
- Moreover, this battery can operate at a temperature as low as -30℃ ( -22℉) and as high as 70℃ ( 158℉).
A start-stop car battery can save up to 15% of fuel. Through its implementation, the start-stop system reduces greenhouse emissions. It conserves energy by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle stops at a red signal.
